MEET THE COLLEGE COACHES!

RETIRED HEAD WOMENS VOLLEYBALL COACH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA

With decades of coaching experience at the collegiate and national level, David Rubio has dedicated his career to developing strong athletes and stronger people. He spent 36 years coaching collegiate volleyball with 31 years as head coach of the University of Arizona women’s volleyball team. During his career, he garnered 692 collegiate wins and guided the Wildcats to 20 NCAA Tournament appearances.

Coach Rubio built one of the nation’s most respected Division I programs and mentored hundreds of student-athletes. He remains active in the collegiate world, sharing his coaching knowledge with teams across the country. He is also currently consulting with the Major League Volleyball team San Diego Mojo.

At his camps, players benefit from his deep knowledge of the game, his ability to teach fundamentals, and his passion for inspiring athletes to push beyond their limits. Coach Rubio believes that volleyball is more than a sport — it’s a tool for building character, leadership and lifelong friendships on and off the court.

HEAD COACH AT WICHITA STATE

Chris Lamb is the longtime head coach of the women’s volleyball program at Wichita State University and one of the most accomplished coaches in NCAA Division I volleyball. Since taking over the program in 2000, Lamb has transformed Wichita State into a nationally competitive program, guiding the Shockers to multiple conference championships and numerous NCAA Tournament appearances.

Entering his 27th season in 2026, Lamb has compiled more than 545 career Division I wins with a winning percentage near .680, ranking him among the winningest active coaches in college volleyball. His teams have consistently produced success, including multiple 20-win seasons, conference titles, and a historic Sweet 16 appearance in 2012, the first in program history.

Lamb’s leadership has also produced elite individual talent, with 11 All-Americans developing under his guidance. In recognition of his success, he was named Volleyball Magazine National Coach of the Year in 2017, after leading Wichita State to an undefeated conference season and an NCAA Tournament national seed.

Before becoming head coach at Wichita State, Lamb served as an assistant coach at University of Arizona and California State University, Bakersfield and founded the successful Empire Volleyball Club in California, where he helped more than 80 athletes earn collegiate scholarships.

HEAD COACH AT BLINN COLLEGE

Blinn College welcomes Gregg Whitis for his first season as head coach of the Buccaneers.

Whitis comes to Blinn following a four-year run as an assistant coach at New Mexico State University.

Whitis brings a wealth of coaching experience spanning more than 30 years, including over 20 seasons at NCAA Division I programs such as New Mexico State, Arizona, Tennessee, Clemson, Michigan, Southern Methodist, Indiana State, and Appalachian State.

Whitis is a revered recruiter and talent developer, with experience as a recruiting coordinator at Tennessee, Clemson, Arizona, Michigan, New Mexico State, and Appalachian State.

During his career, Whitis has recruited and coached numerous NCAA All-Americans and has helped guide four different programs to numerous appearances in the NCAA National Tournament.

In 2010, Whitis secured a recruiting class for Tennessee that ranked as the fourth-best in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com, and it later was regarded as the best in program history.

Whitis began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Indiana State from 1995 to 1997, before taking the head coaching position at the NJCAA program Kankakee Community College from 1997 to 1998.

ASSISTANT COACH FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Hosto is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Wildcats in 2024, but it is his second stint with the program after serving as a student manager (2014, 2015) and volunteer assistant (2017) previously.

Hosto joins the Wildcats staff after serving as the head coach of Arizona Premier Volleyball Club the past three years, where he led multiple age groups and one of the lead coaches with the club. He was also a head coach, camp lead and social media coordinator for Zona Volleyball Club in Tucson since 2021, coaching regional and travel teams while also developing programming, camp sessions, practice plans and instructional content.

Prior his work with Arizona Premier Volleyball Club and Zona Volleyball Club, Hosto was an assistant coach for the indoor volleyball team at Wichita State for three seasons. He helped the Shockers earn the No. 16 overall seed in the 2017 NCAA Tournament and coached the 2017 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Setter of the Year as well as the 2019 AAC Libero of the Year.

He was a volunteer assistant coach with Walker and the Wildcats during the 2017 beach volleyball season and was a student manager with the team starting with the first practice the program ever had in 2014 through the 2015 season.

hype experience CAmp Descriptions

June 5th | Libero Clinic (pin players encourage to attend) | 9:00am-11:00am | Coed | Middle School/High School

The focus of this clinic will be to enhance the three primary skills a libero performs. On the top of the list will be serve receive. We will focus on setting the platform angle early and work on the height, depth and width of the pass. From a defensive standpoint we will introduce the different techniques to dig. Lastly, we will work on serving. The location of the toss, the point of contact on the hand and the appropriate follow through. We will work on the proper footwork for the jump float serve and Spin serve.

June 5th | High School 6v6 Competition | 11:30am-1:30pm | Coed

This camp is designed for those players who want to learn how to function at a higher level within a six on six system. We will compete each session. We introduce different blocking schemes ie Read, front, commit. We will teach basic base, release defensive system. Along, with three person serve receive. This camp is for the highly competitive and motivated player.

June 5th | Middle School Serving/Passing | 2:00pm-4:00pm | Coed

This camp is designed for younger players who have a desire to learn the proper techniques to develop more consistency when executing their serve and pass. When they are passing we will emphasis how early their platform is together. We will encourage them not to bend their arms (elbows). When we teach serving it we will emphasize tossing the ball in line with their hitting shoulder and making solid contact with the heal of their hand.

June 5th | Middle School Attacking/Blocking/Defense | 4:30pm-6:30pm | Coed

In this camp we will teach the progression of the arm swing and the proper mechanics that go with it. We will introduce the proper footwork from the “Step Close” to the four step footwork. Hand to ball contact will be strongly emphasized. We recognize that during the blocking segment some of the kiddo’s might be too little to get their hands over the net. That said they can learn the proper footwork pattern and proper hand position once they get tall enough to block. During the defense segment we will teach them basic defensive moves and techniques

June 6th | High School Attacking/Blocking/Defense | 9:00am-11:00am | Coed

In this camp we will teach the proper arm swing and footwork mechanics. However, we will progress quickly to attacking the different sides of the ball. We will introduce attacking cross body and wrist away. There will be challenging drills to emphasize these techniques. During the blocking segment we will introduce two, three and five step swing block footwork. We will talk about eye work and the proper sequence the eyes need to go through. We will emphasize hand position and arms being diagonal over the net when they jump to block. Lastly, we will introduce cornering the ball defensively and what exactly that means along with teaching them the Bear Crawl.

June 6th | High School 6v6 competition | 11:30am-1:30pm | Coed
